October 2026

Beyond the Numbers -
With most June year-end audits now signed off, this is a good time to look ahead, and there's plenty coming.

AASB 18 is the biggest change coming. Ralph Martin and Nadia Hattingh look at the standard's overarching principles: what belongs in the primary statements, what belongs in the notes, and how to aggregate and disaggregate information. Ralph also explains the reforms to not-for-profit reporting. For most NFPs, special purpose financial statements are being replaced by a new Tier 3 framework. If you're involved with a private sector NFP, I'd encourage you to read it.

On the regulatory front, Ralph and Ross Shillingford cover ASIC's consolidation of 17 financial reporting and audit relief instruments into two. The relief itself has barely changed, but any references in your financial statements and compliance documents will need updating.

AI is a topic no organisation can ignore at the moment, so I'd recommend reading Louis Quintal's article on AI in audit and accounting. Rather than asking which tool to buy, he looks at whether AI is right for you now, where it genuinely improves the work, and what should never be handed over to it.

If any of these topics raise questions for your organisation, please reach out to me or your RSM adviser. We're always happy to help.

Measuring the state, trajectory and needs of Australia’s fintech sector
